HAPPY BIRTHDAY JIMMY STEWART! | May 20, 1908 - July 2, 1997

“I’m the inarticulate man who tries. I don’t really have all the answers, but for some reason, somehow, I make it.”

“The Divorcee” (1930) is seen as one of the most important films of the Pre-Code era and it still surprises with the force and courage with which Norma Shearer’s character acts in it. The story of a strong, risqué woman who rebels against the patriarchal ideal of a virtuous wife while the husband is free to have affairs without tarnishing his reputation and hence confronting the hypocrisy of the double standard promoted feminism long before the term was used and made Norma Shearer (along with her other pre-code movies) almost a feminist pioneer. Based on the novel “Ex-Wife” by Ursula Parrott, it was highly controversial back in the day and ended up getting Norma Shearer her Best Actress Oscar for it. The film had a total of four Academy Award nominations including Best Film

“Marilyn always dreamt of being an actress. She didn’t, by the way, dream of being just a star. She dreamt of being an actress. And she had always lived somehow with that dream. And that is why, despite the fact that she became one of the most unusual and outstanding stars of all time, she herself was never satisfied. When she came to New York, she began to perceive the possibilities of really accomplishing her dream, of being an actress.” - Lee Strasberg

“You’re beginning to believe the illusions we’re spinning here. You’re beginning to think that the tube is reality and that your own lives are unreal. You do! Whatever the tube tells you: you dress like the tube, you eat like the tube, you raise your children like the tube, you even think like the tube. This is mass madness, you maniacs! In God’s name, you people are the real thing, we are the illusion.”
